What do I need before I start?

Check the Plan and Setup rows in the box above. If Setup says Needs admin or IT, ask them before you start.

Need IT or RevOps to approve it? Send them the Slack IT approval one-pager.

How do I connect it to Claude or ChatGPT?

Slack's docs confirm it works in Claude. You don't need a terminal or a config file. Check Slack's docs first: some vendors give you a personal URL or an API key to use in place of the plain endpoint.

Claude (web and desktop app)

If Slack shows up when you browse connectors in Claude, connect it from there instead. That skips steps 2 to 4.

  1. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it “Slack”, paste the server URL https://mcp.slack.com/mcp, and click Continue.
  4. Review the sign-in settings Claude detected and click Add.
  5. Click Connect and sign in to Slack. Then ask Claude something like “What can the Slack connector do?”

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds the connector first under Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web. Each person then connects it from Customize → Connectors. Free plans can add one custom connector.

From Slack's docs: Workspace admin must approve the MCP integration. Custom MCP clients must be backed by a Marketplace-published or internal Slack app (no DCR, no SSE).Source: docs.slack.dev, checked 2026-10-16

How do I connect it to Claude Code or Cursor?

Slack's docs confirm Claude Code and Cursor. Sign in with OAuth in your client (run /mcp in Claude Code). Do it once interactively, and the client stores and refreshes the token.

Put this in .mcp.json (Claude Code, project root) or ~/.cursor/mcp.json (Cursor). Don't commit real keys. Remove the // comment lines if your client requires strict JSON.

What about Grok Bot or another assistant?

Slack's docs don't name Grok Bot, and this site doesn't track Grok Bot support yet. If your assistant lets you add a connector by URL (a remote MCP server), give it the details below. Follow Slack's docs for any extra steps.
